Abstract
Research Goals in Astronautics. Progress takes place not only within scientific and engineering specialties but also in the interaction between these specialties. It is, in fact, precisely in the changing interrelationship between fields that the greatest opportunity for invention lies. Solid state electronics and magnetohydrodynamics are two recent examples.
This is particularly true in the field of space vehicles since a maximum of invention is desired. Here we must consider a broader pattern of interaction also, namely: the environment, vehicle technology, human factors, and the functions to be performed.
Research is required in all four areas. We are just beginning to have tools to examine the space environment and much remains to be done. In vehicle technology, propulsion represents the greatest challenge since we are reaching the limits of chemical fuels and new concepts must be sought in the boundaries between the sciences. In human factors the greatest remaining unknown is the effect of zero gravity. As to the functions to be performed, we have the areas of space weapons, eventual commercial application, and scientific exploration.
In summation, the field of astronautics will be best advanced by careful consideration to the synthesis of technology and function as well as the analysis of individual problems.
