Abstract
During nuclear division in higher eukaryotic cells, four major movements occur: orientation and congression of the chromosomes during prometaphase, poleward movement of the chromosomes during anaphase, and spindle elongation during anaphase and telophase. Many lower eukaryotic cells deviate from this scheme: the chromosomes do not congress, or chromosome segregation is accomplished either by poleward movement or spindle elongation alone (review: Heath 1980). In any event, however, the chromosomes themselves “suffer” these movements passively (Mazia 1961; McIntosh et al. 1975 a); the mechanism of motility resides elsewhere in the cell. The search for this mechanism (or these mechanisms?) has preoccupied students of mitosis and meiosis since the time of Van Beneden and Boveri (discussion and literature: Wilson 1896).
