Chromatin Assembly and the Co-ordination of DNA Replication in the Eukaryotic Chromosome

  • Chapter
International Cell Biology 1980–1981

Abstract

This paper discusses two aspects of chromosomal replication in eukaryotes. First we consider briefly how DNA and histones associate to form the nucleosome subunits of chromatin. Second we consider how the replication of the eukaryotic genome is coordinated. Replication initiates at multiple sites on the chromosome, yet the multiple initiations are co-ordinated such that each region of DNA replicates once and only once in each cell cycle. We ask what DNA sequences specify initiation and what mechanisms prevent re-initiation.
