Zusammenfassung
Der Austausch der Atemgase folgt sowohl in der Lunge als auch in den Geweben den Diffusionsgesetzen, die von dem Würzburger Physiologen Fick bereits vor über 100 Jahren mathematisch formuliert wurden (Fick, 1855). Unter Diffusion verstehen wir bekanntlich einen Ausgleichsvorgang, bei dem nach dem 2. Hauptsatz der Thermodynamik Moleküle vom Ort höherer Konzentration zu einem Ort niederer Konzentration transportiert werden. Die Transportenergie ist dabei die kinetische Energie der Moleküle selbst, die bei ihren Bewegungen in allen Richtungen Zusammenstöße erfahren, wobei jedoch wegen der unterschiedlichen Dichte die Häufigkeit der Kollisionen in Richtung der abnehmenden Konzentration am geringsten ist. Auf diese Weise erfolgt eine Molekülverschiebung so lange, bis ein Konzentrationsausgleich hergestellt ist. Das System geht von einem unwahrscheinlichen in einen wahrscheinlichen Zustand über, oder, anders formuliert, die Entropie strebt einem Maximalwert zu.
