Fundamental Equations

  • William Frederick Durand

In order to develop any approach to a mathematical treatment of a fluid in motion or of the force reaction between a fluid and solid bodies with which it may be in contact or dynamic relation, there must first be formed some picture of the physical constitution of the fluid, or at least of its physical characteristics. This picture may again relate to an actual fluid as occurring in nature or to an ideal medium with specifications permitting a more extended mathematical treatment than is possible with fluids as they actually are.
