Abstract

In the course of the last two hundred years or so the Place de la Concorde and the buildings that surround it have witnessed a fair number of events, some happy, others tragic.1 But on the evening in question for a particular group of men there was occasion only for joy, enthusiasm and hope; indeed, for orthopaedic surgeons all over the world. The Event was taking place.
