Studies on the Extracardial Effects of Nifedipine in Anesthetized Dogs

Abstract

In the mechanism of action of antianginal drugs like nifedipine, we have to distinguish between two components: effects on the heart itself—consisting of coronary and myocardial effects—on the one hand, and extracardial effects on the systemic and pulmonary circulation on the other. To a certain extent both components may improve the disproportion between oxygen supply and oxygen demand of the myocardium in coronary artery or primary myocardial disease [1, 2].
