Palliative radiotherapy and the treatment of advanced or incurable cancer

Abstract

The term “palliative radiotherapy” is used here without restriction as to the method’s curative potential. Palliative radiotherapy as the writers understand it is radiotherapy applied to tumours in an advanced or very advanced state and which are beyond the usual or normal “stage of curability”. Its aim is to bring about temporary arrest of tumour growth, reduction in volume and temporary or even permanent disappearance, provided that the local and general condition of the patient make attainment of these objectives possible.
