Abstract
Helping students gradually to develop greater independence in their clinical practice is a challenge which has many different aspects. To practice independently means that one is able to function in nursing situations as they exist today. How can the teacher help the student to acquire the skills and abilities which will be expected of her as a practitioner in current nursing situations? How can the teacher encourage thoroughness and pride in work well done, without allowing the emphasis upon completion of each detail to interfere with instruction about larger issues and concepts? What approach is practical and realistic enough in its orientation to enable students to survive professionally under the hectic conditions so prevalent in nursing today, yet has sufficient vision and idealism to encourage students to work toward changes in the way nursing care is given?
