Abstract

Since the introduction of the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) in the middle 1930’s (Morgan, Murray, 1935), the test has become very popular with the psychological community. It was not the first thematic apperception technique to be developed; Brittain (1907), Libby (1908) and Schwartz (1932) had all previously utilized pictures that served as stimuli for story productions. Van Lennep (1951) reported that his thematic-type test (The Four Picture Test) had been published in Holland in the early 1930’s. However, the TAT seemed to capture the imagination of projective and personality-minded psychologists to such a degree that “offshoots” began to sprout almost immediately.
