Dr. Grundfest’s view on the ionic basis of electrogenesis in the nerve and muscle membrane is based on his thorough and extensive survey of the behavior of various excitable tissues. His view is well known in the field of neurophysiology; some part of it is shared by many investigators in the field. There is no doubt in our minds that the distribution and the movements of various ions across the membrane are important factors in the production of the resting and action potentials in cellular membranes.
