Abstract

A radio receiver is a non-linear device which converts high frequency electrical oscillations applied to its input terminals into an output electrical potential with certain convenient properties. The primary desideratum is sufficient power to drive some indicating instrument such as a recording ammeter, an oscillograph, a loudspeaker, a magnetic tape recorder, or typewriter. The output potential must also have a spectral distribution of power suitable to the needs of the indicating instrument. Furthermore one relies on the receiver to select the narrow band of high frequencies to which attention is to be directed. Among the necessary functions of a receiver, therefore, are (i) amplification, (ii) frequency conversion, (iii) tuning, (iv) selectivity.
