Group therapy with the very old

  • Chapter
New Thoughts on Old Age

Abstract

Why do psychotherapy with the aged? This question, commonly raised by clinicians, was analyzed by Kastenbaum, who suggested that the “reluctance to work with elderly persons is based largely upon attitudes and values that have been uncritically absorbed from views prevalent in our society.” (3). The present chapter takes this inquiry another step further: why do group psychotherapy with geriatric patients?
