Summary
For purposes of designing, configurating and operating computing systems, model-based descriptions of their load/performance behaviour are desirable. The methodology of modelling computing systems employs mainly event-oriented simulation and stochastic queueing networks as modelling techniques. Both techniques are described and compared regarding their potential validity, their effort of use and their understandability. It is pointed out that, in particular, the high effort incurred in model construction requires the development of suitable software-tools. One such tool, the package COPE as developed in Dortmund, is presented in an overview fashion.
