Blasticidin S

Abstract

Blasticidin S is one of a group of antibiotics that are produced by Streptomyces griseochromogenes (Takeuchi, Hirayama et al., 1958 other members are blasticidin a, b, and c ((Fukunaga, Misato et al., 1955). Blasticidin S inhibits various species among the bacteria and fungi at concentrations between 5 and 100 μg per ml. These sensitive species include both some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, even members of the genus Pseudomonas. Most fungi are not inhibited at low antibiotic concentrations but some, such as Piricularia oryzae, are inhibited at 10 t.g or less. The inhibition of this pathogenic fungus lead to its use as a protective and therapeutic agent in the control of the blast disease of rice. The effect of the antibiotic is greater on the mycelial than on the spore phase of the fungus (Table 1) and the fungicide is therefore applied to the rice blades after infection has occurred (Misato, Ishii et al.,1959).
