Abstract

It was shown a number of years ago that rat liver mitochondria contained an activity which can liberate inorganic phosphate from ATP1. Since then, numerous studies dealing with this mitochondrial ATPase activity have established that its action is different from that of other phosphatases. The extensive study of the mitochondrial ATPase activity has been motivated by the assumption that mitochondrial ATPase may be a part of the enzyme system involved in oxidative phosphorylation2–5.
