Field Equations for Thermoelastic Bodies with Uniform Symmetry

Abstract

In a purely mechanical theory of inhomogeneous bodies formulated recently by Noll [1] and Wang [2] two basic assumptions are used: material uniformity and smoothness. In this paper, I generalize that theory in two respects: First, I replace the assumption of material uniformity by a similar but somewhat weaker assumption of symmetry uniformity. That is, I require the points of a body to have the same mate rial symmetry rather than the same material response. Clearly, material uniformity implies symmetry uniformity, but the converse is not true in general. Second, I consider thermodynam-ical state variables and state functions in this paper, and I derive the thermodynamical field equations for inhomogeneous bodies.
