Geht in der Funktion y= f (x) die Größe x in x + ∆ x über, so ändert sich auch y um ∆y (Abb. 22) und es ist y +∆ y = f (x + +∆x). Daraus ist ∆y = f (x +∆x)-y = f (x +∆x)−f (x). Nach Division durch ∆x folgt ; man bezeichnet diesen Ausdruck als ersten Differenzenquotient. Er liefert das Verhältnis des Zuwachses der abhängigen zum Zuwachs der unabhängigen Veränderlichen.
