Abstract

The problem of the central intensities of stellar absorption lines is considered. The discussion is restricted to absorption lines originating from the ground state. The atomic processes of exciting and de-exciting of the upper stationary state corresponding to the line considered are transitions from and to the ground state together with electron captures on the stationary state and photoionisation from it. The corresponding emission coefficients are evaluated. The resulting fundamental equation governing the radiation field in the stellar atmosphere is discussed. The predictions of the theory concerning central intensities of strong absorption lines are compared with observations. It is possible to account for the observational facts qualitatively, and partly also quantitatively.
