Ohne Luft ist jedes Leben unmöglich. So wird Luft von Mensch, Tier und Pflanze ein- und ausgeatmet. Die atmosphärische Luft besteht aus Sauerstoff und Stickstoff, enthält daneben aber auch Wasser und kleinere Mengen Kohlensäure. Beträgt der Gehalt an Kohlensäure auch nur 6 Teile auf 10000 Teile Luft, so entspricht dies auf die Gesamtatmosphäre der Erde berechnet doch dem ungeheuren Gewicht von über 3000 Billionen Kilogramm Kohlensäure oder über 820 Billionen Kilogramm Kohlenstoff.
