Abstract

Surface mounted printed circuit board (PCB) assembly equipment is expensive and therefore for it to be cost effective it must be properly utilised. If batch sizes are small, the large set-up times of such equipment may not be compatible with this requirement. The design and high level control of a simple flexible assembly system for surface mounted PCB manufacture, which overcomes this apparent conflict, is presented. This is achieved by equipment designed for fast mechanical reconfiguration and reprogramming via a host mini-computer system. This FMS exhibits full vertical integration with management and electronics design computer systems.
