Abstract
It goes without saying that flexible Automation is — in our mind — providing the answer to growing market demands for short batch production, brought about by the need for more innovative products and their associated shorter life cycle.
Such machine tools and systems for flexible manufacturing are available today, even though a few problems still remain.
It is of paramount importants that the selection of such machine tools and systems is given full consideration, since total flexibility not be bought without the full commitment and the involvement of the customer throughout the whole contract period.
Criteria associated with such involvement are indicated here. Certain case-studies are also detailed, showing how a measured approach — using a step-by-step approach — has resulted in success and “complete” flexibility for that customer.
