Simulation for manufacturing systems—a critical review

Abstract

The large number of simulation packages now available has given rise to confusion amongst prospective users. This paper outlines the types of packages available, describes the use of each type, and notes some commercially available packages. A strategy for using the various types of package is described and some of the difficulties of applying simulation techniques are pointed out. Overall, the conclusions are that simulation is an essential tool for planning certain classes of manufacturing systems, but that its difficulties are not well understood.
