Abstract

Rolls-Royce has installed an automated manufacturing system to produce small high performance compressor blades. Rolled bar is delivered into the system in lengths between one to four metres. The bars are cut-up automatically into short blanks which are handled by robots selectively through three broach machines, a wash and an inspection station to produce the finished root fixings, and then into one of two 360° electro-chemical machining cells to shape the finished blade aerofoils. The automation has effectively combined the processes into an integrated manufacturing system yielding up to 75% reductions in shop-floor schedules and work-in-progress. Equipment designs are standardised to provide flexibility in coping with different families of blades and to minimise tool changeover times.
