Abstract
The nearer one gets to clinical injuries the less happy one is about the use of the word “shock”. This embarrassment is not so much with regard to its precise definition but that its use implies the assumption that there is a single definite state or syndrome — like a diagnosable disease or injury — which is there to be recognised if only we know how to do it.
