Abstract

Quantitative analysis of liquid mixtures through fractional distillation may be a matter of difficulties, if the boiling points of the components of the mixture do not differ appreciably, and especially if they form azeotropic mixtures. In the first case an increase in the number of theoretical plates of the column will give a better fractionation. If azeotropic mixtures are formed an increase in the fractionating capacity of the column will — as is well known — not help. In this case it is necessary to change the pressure or to make suitable additions to the sample in order to change the composition of the liquid phase. This can, however, be difficult to realize, if the quantity of sample is small.
