Zusammenfassung

Die viscerale Leishmaniase oder Kala-Azar ist eine Krankheit, die durch das Protozoon, Leishmania donovani (Laveran und Mesnil 1903, Ross 1903), verursacht wird. Die Zusatzbezeichnung „visceral“ wird angewandt, um sie von den Leishmaniasen der Haut bzw. der Haut und Schleimhaut zu unterscheiden, die von zwei anderen Species der Gattung Leishmania, nämlich durch Leishmania tropica (Wright 1903) und Leishmania brasiliensis (Vianna 1911) verursacht werden.
