Myocardial Function in Hemodialysis Patients

Summary

Myocardial impairment in hemodialysis patients is mainly due to the alterations induced by the predialytic uremic stage. Hemodialysis treatment may improve some of these disturbances: by maintaining a normal salt and fluid balance, by clearing uremic toxins, and by ameliorating nutritional status. But hemodialysis treatment may also have deleterious effects: due to A.V. fistula, to hypotension related to ultrafiltration or acetate dialysate, or due to bioincompatibility and β2 accumulation with amyloid deposition.

Treatment of hypertension, anemia and hyperparathyroidism needs particular attention and care.
