Abstract
In the physical experiments which I have since years carried on in my laboratory, especially when determining the influence of air-pressure and temperature on the arc of oscillation and the duration of oscillation of the pendulums of clocks for astronomical purposes, it is of especial importance to know the density of the atmosphere in which the pendulum swings1). As I shall show in a later publication, if the weight of a liter of the air surrounding the pendulum varies by only one milligram (gravity g remaining unchanged), the result will be an aberration of about 0,01 second a day. (In the case of pendulums with lentular bob, this value is somewhat reduced and in the case of cylindrical bobs somewhat increased.) It is premised that the pendulum supposed has no devices for compensating the influence of changes of temperature or air-pressure.
