Abstract
The opinion is often expressed that if a metal has a high melting point it is difficult to produce with it an alloy of uniform composition. When scrutinized, however, this opinion is found to be unwarranted. When I first introduced the aluminothermie metals, such as chromium, manganese, ferrotitanium, &c., into commercial practrice, I had to overcome considerable trouble, since metallurgists would tell me that the melting point of these carbon-free metals or alloys was higher than that of the usual brands then on the market which contained carbon, and that the higher melting point of my metals would interfere with their use.
