Abstract
Numerous metals and alloys have been used for a number of years fo purifying liquid steel. Among these the best known are manganese (in th shape of ferro-manganese), silicon, recently used as highgrade ferro-silicon also alloys of manganese, silicon and iron. Of recent years aluminum ha; to be counted among the well-known additions, for the reason that it possesses in an extraordinary degree the ability to rid liquid steel of the last particles of oxygen or, to use a homely phrase, to “kill” the steel. In this application very small quantities, such as 0·05%, have given satisfactory results.
