Zusammenfassung
Nach dem Aggregatzustand der mobilen und der stationären Phase benannt, lassen sich 4 mögliche Grundformen der Chromatographie definieren, die mit 3 Arbeitsmethoden (Eluierungsentwicklung, Frontalanalyse, Verdrängungsentwicklung) denkbar sind und zu 12 möglichen Wegen führen, von denen allerdings einige bislang mehr theoretische als praktische Bedeutung haben. Diese Arbeitsmethoden, ihre Entwicklung und ihre theoretischen und methodischen Besonderheiten werden in den Monographien von Bayer, Burchfield, Kaiser, Keulemans und Schay 1 eingehender beschrieben. Kaiser nennt als 4. Arbeitstechnik noch die sog. Thermokreislauftechnik, die sich durch Umlaufenlassen eines Temperaturfeldes ergibt. Bei aller methodischen Verschiedenheit weisen diese physikalischen Trennmethoden vor allem eine Gemeinsamkeit auf: Die Wiederholung eines „Elementarprozesses“ (Keulemans, S. 4), dessen genaue Kenntnis zur Beherrschung eines Trennvorganges wünschenswert ist. Die Zahl der möglichen und notwendigen Wiederholungen eines Elementarschrittes (ausgedrückt durch z. B. theoretische Böden pro Längeneinheit einer Säule) charakterisiert den Trennvorgang.
