Abstract

Infections are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in adults with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) [1, 2]. The risk of fatal infection during remission induction therapy approaches 50%. Infection and the threat of infection frequently compromises the administration of chemotherapy. Thus, any program which would substantially diminish the risk of infection should allow for more effective and prolonged administration of chemotherapeutic agents.
