Abstract

The vitamin, folic acid (pteroylglutamic acid)***, is converted to its coenzyme form, 5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolic acid1, by a relatively simple process involving a reduction in the pyrazine ring. The coenzyme, in turn, participates in metabolic reactions1–5 as a carrier of one-carbon (C1) units at the oxidation states of formate, formaldehyde, and methanol.
