Zusammenfassung
Although independent histological descriptions of the sweat glands were pressented by Purkinje and his pupil Wendt, in 1833, and by Breschet and Roussel de Vauzzene, in 1834; it remained for Schiefferdecher (1917, 1922) to recognize that eccrine sweat glands were distinctly different from apocrine sweat glands. Now, when these structures are examined by modern cytological methods, the aptness of his designations is questionable since both types of sweat glands have a merocrine mode of secretion, but with some justification his terminology continues to be used (Weiner and Hellman, 1960). In man, the distinctions between eccrine and apocrine sweat glands are clear cut; they differ in their development, histology, fine structure, distribution, and in their function. The less versatile eccrine sweat glands serve principally in reducing body temperature by the production and surface evaporation of sweat; in moistening and lubricating the epidermis especially where it is greatly thickened; and in formation of sweat in response to emotional stimuli.
