Abstract
Tanganyika, the largest and most populous country within the East African Common Market, covers an area of 341,150 sq. miles — four times that of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1961 the population was estimated at 9.4 million, including 22,700 Europeans, 90,500 Indians, Pakistanis and Goans, and 39,000 Arabs. Though numerically insignificant, the minority groups play an important part in the economic and social life of the country.
