Zusammenfassung
In den vorhergehenden Abschnitten wurden wiederholt Stoffe beschrieben, die als Abfallstoffe oder aber auch zu speziellem Zwecke gebildet werden, und, auf dem Blutwege abtransportiert, die Funktion verschiedenster Organe beeinflussen. Es wurde dann gewöhnlich von „chemischer Steuerung“ dieser Organe gesprochen. In besonderem Maße war hierzu z.B. die Kohlensäure befähigt, welche ja nicht nur weitgehend die Tätigkeit der Atmung, sondern auch die gegenseitige Zuordnung von Atmung und Kreislauf beeinflußt. Daneben dienten zur „chemischen Steuerung“ Stoffe, welche zu einem ganz bestimmten Zwecke an sehr vielen Stellen des Körpers gebildet werden können. Erinnert sei an das Histamin und besonders an das Acetylcholin, das überall dort, wo parasympathische und motorische Nerven endigen, als Mittlersubstanz zwischen Nerv und Erfolgsorgan auftritt (s. S. 462).
