Im Volksmund wird das ungemein häufig verbreitete Leiden „Frostballen“ genannt, obwohl es ursächlich mit dem Frost nichts zu tun hat, sondern weil über dem Ballen wegen der hier sehr verdünnten und gefäßarmen Haut bisweilen Frostbeulen auftreten.
