Abstract

Dr. Fine has summarized what is, in my opinion, the largest and most significant block of work on shock of the past 15 years. Even those portions which may have to be discarded have served as working hypotheses to stimulate the thought and investigation of many workers. He has offered answers to several perplexing questions:

  1. 1.

    What happens, as a function of time, to render reversible shock irreversible ?

  2. 2.

    Is there a final course common to various types of shock, and what is it ?

  3. 3.

    Why does stimulation of the R.E.S. induce tolerance to various forms of shock ?

  4. 4.

    Is there a toxic factor in shock ?
