Abstract
I am often asked why rational mechanics is necessarily continuum mechanics. The answer is that it is not. The cultivators of rational mechanics try to maintain standards of two kinds:
-
1
The model adopted should mirror nature.
-
2
The mathematics, besides being rigorous, should match the model in generality.
