Abstract

The extensive literature dealing with the early development of the nervous system (e.g., Mihalkovics, 1887; v. Kupffer, 1906; Meek, 1910; Bergquist and KällÉn, 1954) presents strong evidence supporting the idea that the morphogenesis of the central nervous system is in principle identical in all vertebrates. Hence the observations in chick reported in the present study should form a good foundation for discussion of the conflicting views with regard to the early morphogenesis of the central nervous system of vertebrates in general.
