Abstract

Cracks in tensile stress fields have aroused the interest of applied mathematicians as problems of discontinuities and the interest of engineers because they form the most important mode of failure of many components. The stresses near cracks in an elastic medium have been studied theoretically (for instance [1, 2, 3]) and also measured experimentally by direct photo-elastic measurement of thin plates [4, 5] and by frozen stress photoelastic analysis of thick plates [6].
