Concentrated loadings on shells

Abstract

The computation of the stresses in shells caused by concentrated loadings involves large difficulties, because the solutions of shell equations at the loading points are singular. In most cases the formulation of stresses and deflections under various static as dynamic loadings results in infinite series. Usually, after the first few terms, the remaining ones in the series decrease very slowly in absolute value. As a consequence, an exceedingly large number of terms may be required to obtain satisfactory accuracy in the results. Thus the amount of work involved is prohibitive in most calculations. In some cases the series in the area near the loading point are not convergent and the usual treatment gives no results.
