Number, Size and Arrangement of Osteoblasts in Osteons at Different Stages of Formation

  • Chapter

Abstract

The secretory activity of osteoblasts has been quantitatively investigated by means of different techniques. Autoradiographic studies on Glycine-H3 and Thymidine-H3 injected in young rabbits indicate that, on an average, a periosteal osteoblast produces 2860 µ 3 of matrix daily, during three days, before becoming either an osteocyte or a relatively inactive lining osteoblast (10). Using stereological methods on histological sections of human rib cortical bone, a mean value of 220 µ 3 of matrix daily produced per osteoblast was estimated (11). More recently, the ‘secretory territories’ of osteoblasts on rat parietal bone were precisely measured under the scanning electron microscope and a daily matrix production rate of approximately 470 µ 3 was derived (1).
