Summary
A constitutive relation for statically and dynamically loaded sands is presented which accounts for nonlinear elastic and plastic behavior in both compression and shear. The material model is based on a modified Mohr-Coulomb criterion, a non-associated flow rule and a combined isotropic-kinematic hardening hypothesis. To distinguish between initial loading and unloading/reloading the well known bounding surface concept is employed. In addition, a cap-function is used to account for yielding under isotropic loading conditions. All necessary material parameters are obtained from standard triaxial tests. Finally, the application of the material model is demonstrated in finite element calculations of a dam.
