Abstract

The action of narcotics on ferments, cells and living tissues usually shows an approximately linear relation between concentration and action, a relation which is relatively rare in the case of other drugs. The explanation of these curves is, therefore, associated with the problem of the mode of action of narcotics on cells. Unfortunately any explanation involves assumptions regarding the nature of the cell membrane, which is a controversial matter and since hypotheses regarding the nature of the cell membrane are to a large extent based on the action of narcotics, the subject is a difficult one to discuss.
