Part of the book series: Handbuch der Pflanzenphysiologie / Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((532,volume 10))

Abstract

This chapter will deal mostly with recent investigations; and earlier information will be considered only when it is necessary to a full understanding of the present developments. The main reason for this is that the earlier work has recently been discussed in some detail (Goodwin 1952a). The same considerations have resulted in the chemistry of the pigments discussed here being kept down to a minimum. Volume V of this series contains a chapter mainly concerned with their chemistry, and more detailed information can be found in monographs and reviews by Karrer and Jucker (1950) and Goodwin (1952a, 1955a). Analytical methods in common use for carotenoids have been described in vol. III of Paech and Tracey’s “Handbook of Plant Analysis” (Goodwin 1955b).
