Abstract

It has been well established that the typical woody plant is vascular, i.e., it possesses a specialized conducting system consisting of phloem and xylem, and it is perennial; in addition, it has a persistent stem that continues to live and increase in thickness for a number of years. Such plants are of three types—lianas, shrubs and trees; but only trees are the source of commercial wood.

Contribution No. 335 from the Department of Organic Chemistry and Enzymology Fordham University, New York. — The experimental results from this laboratory were obtained with the aid of grants or fellowships of the National Science Foundation, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Office of Naval Research, the U.S. Public Health Service, the Research Corporation and Procter and Gamble Co. — Parts of this report were discussed at the 3rd International Lignin Round Table held at Appleton, Wis., September 1956, and at the International Congress of Chemistry, Paris, July 1957.
