Abstract

As we approach the twenty-first century I would suggest that the ideas of community care hold the key to providing more responsive mental health services, more suited to the needs and wishes of the individual client. The gradual development and the diversity of initiatives also serves to reflect local circumstances, with an opportunity to engage the collaboration of all relevant people. However, there remains many questions about the economics and the apparent benefits of the shift to community-orientated services (Goodwin, 1989; Warner, 1985).
