Zusammenfassung

Mittelnorclengland wird in einer Länge von 240 km und bis zu 50 km Breite von dem kräftig zerschnittenen Plateaugebirge oder Upland der Pennines eingenommen, deren flach gewölbte Bücken leicht gegen E bis SE geneigt sind und hier ohne scharfe Grenze in das benachbarte Niederland übergehen. Gegen die Edensenke im W aber kehren die Pennines einen 400–600 m hohen Steilabfall. Weiter s. legen sich die Howgill Fells vor sie, welche die Verbindung mit dem Seenbergland herstellen, dann Bowland Forest und zuletzt Rossendale Forest, die sich als kräftige Vorposten in das Tiefland von Lancashire vorschieben und kulturgeographisch mehr zu ihm gehören als zu dem Hauptzug der Pennines. Dieser, das „Rückgrat“ von N-England, endigt schließlich im S an der Trentfurche, nur mehr 250–300 m hoch. Die N-Grenze wird herkömmlich in das Tyne Gap (120 m) verlegt, unterhalb dessen der Irthing gegen W zum Eden, der Tyne nach E zur Nordsee fließt. Allein n. davon setzt sich das Hochland durch Vermittlung der Bewcastle Fells in den Cheviot Hills fort, welche zwar auch mit den schottischen Uplands zusammenhängen, jedoch gewisse Züge mit den Pennines gemeinsam haben und ihre Hauptabdachung gleich diesen gegen E kehren. Sie werden hier daher in unmittelbarem Anschluß betrachtet werden.
